application in photodynamic therapy (PDT). The authors did not mention intralesional PDT, a seldom used technique which potential, though, is in our opinion underrecognized and underestimated. As shown in table 1 , intralesional PDT has been reported to be an effective and safe treatment for skin metastases of breast cancer [2] , superficial and nodular basal-cell carcinoma [3, 4, 6, 7] , squamous-cell carcinoma [4–7] , Paget’s disease [5] and acne vulgaris [8] . We have also successfully treated anogenital condylomata [unpubl. data]. Performing intralesional PDT is less time-consuming than several other pretreatment procedures [1] . Moreover, a study showed that the fluorescence induced by the intralesional injection of the prodrug was present as early as 4 h [9] ; nonetheless, the time necessary to allow the conversion of the prodrug into the final photosensitizer is likely to be much shorter, as incubations

Effect of Silver Nanoparticles on Improving the Efficacy of 5-Aminolevulinic Acid-Induced Photodynamic Therapy

Introduction: The most important limitation of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA)-induced photodynamic therapy (PDT) is the efficacy of the cells in converting 5-ALA to protoporphyrin IX. The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with the photosensitivity at the surface plasmon resonance wavelength on 5-ALA-mediated PDT. Material and Methods: First of a...

A Study on the Photobleaching Effect of 5-ALA Conjugated Gold Nanoparticles in a CT26 Tumor Model During Photodynamic Therapy

Introduction During the process photodynamic therapy (PDT), bleaching of photosensitizer induced by irradiation and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) can provide some information concerning the efficiency of treatment. Since gold nanoparticles (GNPs) have been highlighted as efficient drug delivery systems, in this study, by utilizing GNPs conjugated with 5 aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA-...

Morphine gel 0.3% does not relieve pain during topical photodynamic therapy: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

There is a demand for pain relief during photodynamic therapy. We therefore investigated the efficacy and side-effects of topical morphine gel 0.3% for pain relief during topical photodynamic therapy in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. The study involved 28 patients with actinic keratoses or basal cell carcinomas. Each patient was treated with photodynamic therapy after sup...

Monitoring the accumulation and dissipation of the photosensitizer protoporphyrin IX during standard dermatological methyl-aminolevulinate photodynamic therapy utilizing non-invasive fluorescence imaging and quantification.

BACKGROUND Dermatological methyl-aminolevulinate photodynamic therapy (MAL-PDT) is utilized to successfully treat dermatological conditions. This study monitored fluorescence changes attributed to the accumulation and destruction of the photosensitizer, protoporphyrin IX (PpIX), at several different stages during the first and second treatments of clinical dermatological MAL-PDT. METHODS A co...

Photodynamic Therapy Using Systemic Administration of 5-Aminolevulinic Acid and a 410-nm Wavelength Light-Emitting Diode for Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus-Infected Ulcers in Mice

Bacterial resistance to antibiotics has become a worldwide problem. One potential alternative for bacterial control is photodynamic therapy. 5-aminolevulinic acid is a natural precursor of the photosensitizer protoporphyrin IX. Relatively little is known about the antibacterial efficacy of photodynamic therapy using the systemic administration of 5-aminolevulinic acid; a few reports have shown ...
